Manila, Philippines – UPM NTHC spearheaded the eHealth Training for Educators of the Health Professions last August 7-9 at NTHC Conference Room. Lots of sharing on eHealth tools for teaching and research where hands-on experience updated nurse educators on the changing facets of health care delivery in the country.
eHT, as it is commonly called, is an intensive three-day hands-on training for faculty members of nursing schools. It aims to showcase eHealth in molding highly competent, evidence-based and relevant nursing practitioners, researchers and educators in the field. Topics in the training intend to help educators in seamlessly integrating learning management systems and electronic medical records into the nursing curriculum.
How ICTs could address problems in the Philippine health care system was discussed on the first day of the training along with Principles of Ethics on eHealth, Standards, Free and Open –Source software and Networking. In the afternoon, trainees had a hands on experience in UPM NTHC’s homegrown technology, CHITS (Community Health Information Tracking System).
Mr. John Faustorilla, eHealth Training’s lead trainer reported that participants were given time to use the electronic medical records and the Open Medical Records System [OpenMRS]. In the afternoon, participants have become more enthusiastic over the Course Management System: MOODLE since it allowed them to put class room resources such as handouts, create assignments and even administer online quizzes in students’ computers.
MOODLE is freely available software application which allows participants to use additional online and offline tools for creating quizzes, searching through online databases, drawing creative mindmaps, conducting videoconferencing in an instant.
eLearning tool kit and strategies on Integrating Informatics to the Nursing Curricula were discussed to prepare trainees in their teaching approaches with the use of ICT.
At the end of the eHT, trainees were left with their hands full of available technologies that they could use in the classroom.
“Completion of the course continues to build a community of practice, where they can share their expertise and get support from fellow course alumna,” says Mr. Faustorilla.
The eHealth Training is an initiave of NTHC Capability Bulding team. It has targeted private and public nursing institutions and hospitals to better disseminate existing eHealth applications in the country which can be integrated in their current set-up.
