QUEZON CITY, Philippines — The National Telehealth Center, under the National Institutes of Health of the University of the Philippines Manila, conducted a data managers training for the health officers of Quezon City, in coordination with the Quezon City Health Department. The four, weekly, 5-day trainings on the utilization, maintenance and monitoring of CHITS, which started yesterday, will run for the whole month of February.

There will be about 40 participants for the whole February, mostly Quezon City health program officers and district supervisors. The training will mainly encompass the basic use CHITS, equipment maintenance, and most importantly, the use of good quality data for decision making.

CHITS is a homegrown medical record developed by UP Manila – NTHC to improve health information management in the country’s health centers, which widely run in a paper-based system. CHITS features several health modules such as maternal care, lying-in, and early childhood care and development (ECCD) which are tailored to the programs of the Department of Health. The computerized health information system, once installed, eradicates common problems such as slow inefficient processes, lost files and duplicated data.

At present, CHITS is deployed to more than 250 health facilities in the country, 73 in Quezon City.

“The ultimate goal for CHITS is for health centers to have evidence-based decision making through good quality data,” Arturo Ongkeko Jr., project manager of CHITS Quezon City, said during the training. “We hope that after this training, they will be empowered and they will love CHITS.”
