UP Manila Department of Surgery and the National Telehealth Center joins the 29th APAN Meeting thru DVTS
Dr. Serafin C. Hilvano, Chair of UP-PGH Department of Surgery and Head of the UP Manila IT Council, along with National Telehealth Center Director, Dr. Alvin B. Marcelo, attended the 29th Asia-Pacific Advanced Network (APAN) Meeting in Sydney, Australia without having to leave the premises of the UP Manila campus. With the use of DVTS or Digital Video Transport System, UP Manila was able to join in on a teleconference being done from multiple Asia-Pacific locations which included Australia, South Korea, Taiwan, Vietnam and two locations from Japan – Hokkaido and Fukuoka. The topic discussed in the teleconference was about the use of VATS in Segmentectomy. VATS or Video Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that is designed to diagnose or treat problems in the chest area. Each party shared their opinions regarding different surgical cases using a similar approach called VATS Segmentectomy, a procedure not widely used since Lobectomy is the preferred surgical procedure done for Lung cancer cases.
For the past two years, the videoconferences were done in DOST-ASTI (Advanced Science and Technology Institute) located in UP Diliman. This was the first time such a videoconference was conducted within the UP Manila campus and was made possible through the joint efforts of the UPM Department of Surgery, ASTI, NThC and IMS. The event was held last February 11, 2010 at the Ground floor of the University Library, University of the Philippines Manila.
